Expected results by the end of this research:
Identify the ideal social functionalities for live streaming players (music);
Identify new social functionalities for live streaming players (music);
Establish a set of best practice in the use of social mashups (e.g. information and content provided by web services);
Propose new uses for the data (comments, tweets, facebook posts, etc) generated during live streaming events;
Propose new ways to monetize music live streaming services, based on social networking and user generated content added value.

In every research, a comprehensive analyse of the state of the art is of the utmost importance. If we neglect this important milestone, there is a chance we might end up inventing the wheel.
In my dissertation I have identified three areas of expertise, which, in my opinion, should be included in the state of the art analyses:
Social Media, which social media functionalities are available in social network applications and, if possible, which are most commonly used?
Mashups, which of those social network applications are using APIs from other web services? With which technology were they developed? What information do they retrieve from those web services? What information is provided for other applications?
Streaming technology, what technology is being used for live and on demand video/audio streaming?
I already have some previous knowledge on streaming technology from Urock’s state of the art, therefore I will only need to refresh that information. For this reason, I have decided to conduct a thorough research on Social Media and Mashups.
First I need to identify the applications that will be included in this study and create a registration table that will help me to systematize the gathered data.
I have come across a resource that might be very useful for everyone who is conducting this kind of research, “The Conversation Prism”.
The Conversation Prism
The Conversation Prism is a living social media map presented by Brian Solis and Jesse Thomas. It is a visual representation of social media, grouping similar applications according to their type of use and content. This resource will allow me to compare social media applications with different targets and look for common social functionalities.
Conversation Prism 2.0 is the latest version and features the contribution of many users that, over the past year, have tagged the first version of the map published on Flickr with suggestions of new applications that should be added to the list.
What better way to start a social media research than using a comprehensive list developed in collaboration by an active online community?

A opção por esta temática prende-se com a necessidade de dar resposta a especificidades da plataforma que estou a desenvolver.
Como foi referido no post anterior, a minha dissertação surge como continuidade do projecto iniciado no primeiro ano de mestrado. O projecto Urock tem uma forte componente social e um público-alvo que é utilizador habitual de redes sociais. Muitos dos futuros utilizadores da plataforma já têm o seu perfil e informação pessoal disponível noutras plataformas e/ou já partilharam conteúdos na web (video, fotografias, texto, etc). Numa altura em que as aplicações web com o maior número de utilizadores (facebook, twitter, myspace, flickr, etc) disponibilizam APIs que permitem a outras aplicações utilizar os seus serviços, seria impensável obrigar esses utilizadores a preencher novos perfis, submeter nova informação e conteúdos. Importa por isso implementar funcionalidade sociais que utilizem serviços de outras aplicações existentes (mashup) e identificar, com exactidão, qual a informação a retirar e partilhar com essas aplicações.

A dissertação será escrita em inglês pelas seguintes razões:
- a maioria das fontes são em inglês (livros, artigos, etc);
- o público-alvo da dissertação aumenta exponencialmente;
- um Universo de leitores superior poderá levar ao aumento de feedback em relação ao trabalho;
- facilita a redacção de possíveis artigos.
De forma a capitalizar o trabalho desde o inicio, os futuros posts serão redigidos em inglês.
Esta semana decorreu a primeira reunião de trabalho com os orientadores que se revelou muito importante na consolidação do projecto de dissertação. Dando continuidade ao trabalho realizado no ano transacto, o objectivo inicial passava pela identificação e implementação das funcionalidades sociais para a plataforma UGC Urock, tendo como prioridade a utilização de APIs de outros serviços Web. Seguindo esta orientação, os resultados desta investigação incidiriam, naturalmente, sobre funcionadades sociais complementares à transmissão de conteúdos de caracter musical.
No entanto, esta investigação aborda temas bastante actuais (redes sociais, gestão de informação, live streaming e mashups) que poderão ter interesse para outras áreas de conteúdos . Por esse motivo, optou-se por efectuar uma abordagem mais lata, permitindo que as conclusões desta investigação possam ser aplicadas à transmissão de conteúdos video e audio em geral.
O objectivo passa agora pela identificação e implementação de funcionalidades sociais para a transmissão de conteúdos em directo. De forma a validar as conclusões desta investigação, será desenvolvido o protótipo de um "Social Mashup Media Player" que será posteriormente implementado na plataforma Urock.
O projecto passa a ser designado pelo acrónimo SMILE, Social Mashups for Interactive Live Events.
